For an alluring trekking destination for the weekends, Nag Tibba in the hinterlands of Garhwal is a ten on ten. With 9,915 ft maximum altitude, it is perfectly suitable for beginners and children, poses no threat of altitude sickness, offering a thoroughly enlivening trek instead. Anyone staying in and around Delhi can plan Nag Tibba- the highest peak of the Nag Tibba range in the Lesser Himalayas, for a rejuvenating weekend in the calm depths of forested mountains. With a couple of days added to the trek, “the queen of the hills” Mussoorie can be covered too.

Starting from Pantwari, a quiet hamlet in the vicinity of Dehradun-Mussoorie, the trek begins up a rocky ascent and after a couple of hours on the trail, enters the grove of oaks and rhododendrons. In warmer times on this path, you will be greeted with summer blossoms and greenery while winter comes with abundance of snow. The camping for the night is in a clearing at the edge of the forest, overlooking the undulations of the Lesser Himalayan green slopes expanding far and beyond. The trek goes on up to Nag Tibba base, marked by a temple dedicated to the serpent god, and from there to Nag Tibba top. The climax of the hike comes with the unveiling of a vision of the Gangotri group of peaks. From the high point of Nag Tibba, you can mark out Bandarpoonch, Kedarnath and Chanabang—all absolutely mesmerizing snow peaks of the Garhwal Himalayas!

Dehradun to Khatian Base Camp 7,627 ft (2,325 m)

The route takes you to Pantwari via the famous Mussoorie Kempty Falls. On the way, you come across the Yamuna Bridge, which overlooks the sublime hills and makes one feel the grandeur of Nature. The Yamuna now flows parallel to the road to Nainbagh, which is also the road to one of the Char Dhaams, Yamunotri. Take a right from the Nainbagh main market and reach Pantwari after a 12 km drive. This is the starting point of the trek.

The 4.5 km trek marks a gradual ascent using the stone trail made by the forest department. This is followed by a rocky shepherds’ trail. There are five road crossings on the way. Do remember to enjoy the leisure walk past vast tracts of farmland. The trail also entails semi-defined trail which zigzags upwards until you finally reach a small clearing. This is Khatian – our night halt for the day.

Khatian Base Camp 7,627 ft (2,325 m) to

The trail passes through a dense forest. In an hour, you reach the Nag Tibba Base Camp. It is a gradual walk with some steep ascent too. The final leap marks a 1km- steep ascent into the forest. Do remember to spot a flag on the highest point called Nag Tibba “Jhandi” or summit. Behold the spectacular views of the Himalayan ranges of Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, Kala Nag, Srikanta, and Gangotri.

After a short while, begin the retreat to Nag Tibba Base. In order to reach Bhatwadi, you must follow the single trail that goes along the stream. An hour later, do stop at a place encircled by forests, where the stream flows on one side here and there are a couple of shepherds’ huts on the other side – this is Moriana. As you trek further, the forest cover ends and you can easily locate the gate of the forest department. Continue to follow the trail until you finally reach Bhatwadi village, which marks the end of the trek. We shall head to Dehradun via Pantwari (8 kms from Bhatwadi village) and Mussoorie.
